What to do

If you love the outdoors this is one of the best places in the country to visit for walking, coastline, beaches, nature and historical monuments.

Crabbing and rock pooling

on the Llyn Peninsula

Before you go

Before setting off check the weather as it can be changeable on the Llyn Peninsula and check the tides otherwise you might be disappointed with no water, or too much...

If you are crabbing from harbour walls probably best to be within a couple of hours of high tide to ensure there's enough water. Whereas rock pools tend to be more exposed towards low tide.

A good place to check is the BBC tidal website with some local links here:

Trefor Beach

Yes our very own beach just 10 minutes walk from the cottage or if you need to you can drive and park right by the beach. This is an easy place to get to and go crabbing from due to the large granite pier which is safe and offers protection from the elements.

Porthmadog

Amongst the other attractions around Porthmadog - two independent ice-cream parlours amongst them - crabbing is popular from the harbour wall - apparently a long line is required here..

Abersoch

Abersoch ticks many boxes. As well as being a gem of a location, with a lovely village, great beaches and fabulous scenery, it also has great crabbing. In fact they have an annual crabbing competition competition in August.

There are also some rock pools at low tide near the Yacht Club.

Porth Dinllaen Beach and Porth Nefyn

This has great rock pools but is also a key honey spot on the north coast of the Llyn Peninsula, but with good reason. Fabulous long beaches, a pub on the beach as part of the National Trust owned hamlet and a golf course along the top.

Porth Nefyn Is a bit to the east of it and has a stone breakwater which is popular for crabbing and its own beach  so all in all a good spot for the family for beaches, crabbing and rock pools.
